Museu da Luz

Mourão, Portugal

This Museum is part of the new Aldeia da Luz, a compound built to rehouse the inhabitants of the town that was submerged by the construction of the Alqueva dam. The Museum presents the local history with ethnographic and archaeological collections. The architects, Pedro Pacheco and Marie Clément, intersected a contemporary approach with the type of building of the inhabitants of this region during roman times. For this effect they chose Xisto de Mourão (Schist), a local resource that was profusely used on walls and floors, both in the interior and exterior of the building. Its greyish-brown tonality is warm and inviting and in perfect harmony with the colour of the selected wood.
