Born in Funchal (Madeira Island), Paulo David’s professional training began in Lisbon. When he returned to Madeira, he founded his own studio, Paulo David Arquitectos, located in the centre of Funchal. The studio’s work has been recognized with several international awards and presentations, such as the Alvar Aalto Medal, Helsinki; the AICA – International Association of Art Critics/Ministry of Culture Award; the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture. His work has been published and featured in several exhibitions with emphasis on the 15th Venice Biennale of Architecture, with the exhibition Inverted Ruins, Paisagem como arquitectura in Garagem Sul, Centro Cultural de Belém, and Global Ends – Towards the Beginning at Gallery Ma in Tokyo to celebrate the galleries’ 25th anniversary. His work was also mentioned in the texts of José Tolentino Mendonça “Saber ouvir os lugares” and Valter Hugo Mãe “Falar com os vulcões”. He was awarded a Commendation of the Ordem Infante Dom Henrique from the Portuguese Republic. Besides his activity as an architect, Paulo David founded and co-coordinated the bureau for urban studies “Gabinete da Cidade”, as a result of the major fires in Madeira in the Summer of 2016, to classify the damages and plan the rehabilitation of the territory affected by that tragic event. Paulo David maintains the intention of not having a website. He does not wear a watch and, during weekends, he takes walks along coastal paths of the island, which end with a dive into the Atlantic Ocean.
