Data Center PT

Covilhã, Portugal

Located at the heart of Cova da Beira, next to the city of Covilhã, Data Center PT is one of the largest processing centers in the world, and the biggest one in Portugal. It has 671 servers and is fully powered by renewable energy sources.

With 75.500m², the project by architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça is covered with slate from the Cova da Beira region. The use of this particular stone allowed for the maintenance of the valley’s “strength” and “energy”, according to the architect.

In connection with its surrounding nature, Data Center PT enhances both the beauty of Portuguese slate and the Cova da Beira valley, whilst stressing the potential of next generation technologies for boosting the economy. The building was awarded the Brill Award for Efficient IT in 2004, in the Data Center Design category.
