The Traveller
Portugal
“The traveller has travelled within his country. This means that he has travelled within himself, through the culture that has formed him and that is forming him (…).”
José Saramago, Journey to Portugal
The Traveller is a national installation on an urban scale that brings some of the outdoor works of the First Stone to the general public, giving visibility to creativity, economy and sustainability and enhancing the investment that went into this programme, which ended in 2022.
Stretching across Portugal, continent and the islands, The Traveller is the largest cultural decentralization effort of its kind, placing unmissable stone installations in public or semi-public spaces.
From north to south, this journey through art, architecture, design and stone unites a series of iconic works that are already installed in some of Portugal’s most culturally rich locations.
These include:
Bench by Álvaro Siza, Serralves Foundation (Porto)
Deconstructing the Cube by Amanda Levete, Centro das Artes (Porto de Mós)
X by Mia Hägg, Centro das Artes (Porto de Mós)
Muros de Luz by Marcio Kogan, Gardens of Mosteiro de Alcobaça (Alcobaça)
Petra by Vhils, Museu Nacional dos Coches (Lisboa)
Hell’s Kitchen Bench by Álvaro Siza, Museu Nacional dos Coches (Lisboa)
The Traveller enjoys the High Patronage of the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
